Training Example

This is an example of our training standards.  It is modeled after the military training style, which allows us to detail the training and ensures complete understanding and uniformity of our training standards within different units in our Regiment.

mEDICAL Training

 

TASK: Perform combat medical treatment of a casualty using the TCCC concept. Properly identify and use Compression Bandage, Tourniquet, Litter/Drag Transport. Identify Heat Casualty Symptoms and Treatment. Identify Treatment for Gunshot Wounds.

CONDITIONS: Given a casualty with a set of symptoms and/or multiple injuries, perform steps to stabilize the patient, prepare for moving patient to extraction site, and give 9-Line MEDEVAC

STANDARDS:

  1. Properly identify symptoms of and treatment for Heat Injuries
  2. Properly Apply tourniquet and Compression Bandage
  3. Properly Splint a broken bone
    1. Identify materials you can use for a splint
  4. Properly move a patient to an extraction point
  5. Give 9-Line MEDEVAC (Palehorse will monitor)

 

Informational Instruction Outline

  1. Properly identify symptoms of and treatment for Heat Injuries
    1. Heat cramps
      1. Symptoms
        1. Painful cramps, especially in the legs, Flushed, moist skin.
      2. Treatment
        1. Move to shady cool place and rest. Do not continue to participate in any activity.
        2. Remove excess clothing, Place cool cloths on skin; fan skin. Give cool sports drinks containing salt and sugar, Stretch cramped muscles slowly and gently.
    2. Heat exhaustion
      1. Symptoms
        1. Muscle cramps, Pale, moist skin, usually a fever over 100.4° F (or 34° C)
        2. Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Headache, Fatigue, Weakness, Anxiety, Faint feeling
      2. Treatment
        1. Move to shady cool place and rest, Remove excess clothing
        2. Place cool cloths on skin; fan skin, Give cool sports drinks containing salt and sugar
        3. If no improvement or unable to take fluids call for medevac, IV (intravenous) fluids may be needed.
    3. Heat stroke
      1. Symptoms
        1. Warm, dry skin. High fever, usually over 104° F (or 40° C)
        2. Rapid heart rate, Loss of appetite, Nausea, Vomiting, Headache, Fatigue, Confusion, Agitation, Lethargy, Stupor, Seizures, Coma, Death
      2. Treatment
        1. Move to shady cool place and rest, Remove excess clothing
        2. Drench skin with cool water; fan skin, Place ice bags on the armpits and groin areas
        3. Offer cool fluids if alert and able to drink. Call in 9-Line MEDEVAC IMMEDIATELY
  1. Properly Apply tourniquet/Compression Bandage to a wound
    1. Place tourniquet around limb between wound and heart, 2 to 4 inches from edge of wound
    2. Do not place directly over wound or fracture or directly on a joint
    3. Properly identify patient as having a tourniquet
      1. Mark casualty’s forehead, if possible, with “T” to indicate tourniquet
      2. Write info on CAT tourniquet
    4. Compression Bandage
      1. Place Wadding on wound
      2. Place clean side of compression bandage over wadding.
      3. Wrap ends of bandage around tightly, but not tight to cut off circulation, Tie ends
  2. Properly Splint a closed broken thigh bone of a limb
    1. Items that can be used as a splint
      1. Poles, branches, wood etc…
    2. Check for casualty’s pulse below the fracture site. (There is a pulse)
  3. Properly move a patient to an extraction point
    1. Scenario: Closed Broken Thigh Bone, Patient is semi-alert
    2. Litter, Drag or Carry
      1. Based on injuries, use proper transport method?
      2. Perform lifting evenly and safely?
      3. Security?
  4. Give 9-Line MEDEVAC PALEHORSE will track
    1. MEDEVAC (1 Time)
      1. Line 1: Location of pickup site- 8-digit grid (2 Points)
      2. Line 2: Frequency and call-sign at pickup site (1 Point)
      3. Line 3: Number of patients by precedence- (1 Point)
